Listed in order from closest to furthest from Copenhagen.

1. Dragør: A Quaint Seaside Escape

Address: Dragør Stationsplads 3, 2791 Dragør, Denmark
Website: www.spks.dk/findfilial/dragoer

For a tranquil and idyllic getaway, make your way to the charming coastal town of Dragør. Located just a short drive or bus ride from Copenhagen, this picturesque village is a testament to Denmark’s maritime heritage and offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life.

Dragør’s cobbled streets, colorful houses, and inviting harbor side create an atmosphere that feels almost frozen in time. Even though I am not a native, it feels nostalgic being there, especially if you stop by one of the ice cream shops: Dragør Is or Vaffelbageren Nyhavn Dragør (my personal FAV). Explore one of the many little museums in the town, or simply meander through the narrow alleys (practically car-free) lined with well-preserved half-timbered houses. The tranquil beaches and fresh sea breeze offer the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll, and the local eateries serve up delicious seafood dishes that are not to be missed.

This charming destination is perfect for those seeking a day filled with laughter, excitement, and a touch of old-world charm.

Here you’ll find an assortment of old-school and modern rides, from classic wooden roller coasters to whizzing rides. The park blends of history and entertainment to create a unique atmosphere you most definitely couldn’t find at a Six Flags. Nestled in the charming town of Helsingør, just a scenic 45-minute train ride north of Copenhagen, lies the majestic Kronborg Slot, also known as Hamlet’s Castle. This UNESCO World Heritage site is not only a stunning example of Renaissance architecture but also a place steeped in history and literary lore. The castle’s imposing turrets and grand halls will transport you to a bygone era, where Danish kings once held court.

Kronborg’s claim to fame extends beyond its architectural beauty. The castle is famously linked to William Shakespeare’s iconic play, “Hamlet.” As you explore the casemates, corridors, and chambers, you’ll find reminders of the tragic tale of the Danish prince. Don’t miss the statue of Hamlet himself in the courtyard or the underground passages that lead to hidden nooks and crannies.

4. Viking Ship Museum: Sail Through History

Address: Vindeboder 12, 4000 Roskilde, Denmark

A day-trip to the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, just a short train ride west of Copenhagen, is a journey back to the days of Norse exploration and seafaring prowess. The museum boasts a unique collection of well-preserved Viking ships, each a testament to the craftsmanship and courage of these ancient mariners.

The highlight of the museum is the chance to see the five original Viking ships, painstakingly restored and displayed. Visitors can also try their hand at traditional boat-building techniques or even embark on a sailing adventure aboard a reconstructed Viking ship in the nearby fjord. The museum provides a fascinating insight into Viking culture, offering a window into their daily lives, myths, and legendary expeditions.

We got on a viking boat tour, and I fatefully got selected to be one of the lead rowers! It was a bit nerving racking, but a blast all the same.

After the museum visit, I recommend stopping by Restaurant Raadhuskælderen for a beautiful courtyard lunch!

6. Møns Klint: Cold Water Plunge and Cliff Views

Address: 4791 Borre, Denmark

If you’re in the mood for a more serene and natural escape, head south of Copenhagen to the stunning cliffs of Møns Klint on the island of Møn. This geological marvel showcases the sheer beauty and power of nature, as towering white chalk cliffs plunge dramatically into the azure Baltic Sea. I ended up taking a dip in the clear water, but even in the dead of summer it was bone chilling (even to my Danish partner)!

Møns Klint offers picturesque hiking trails that wind through lush beech forests, offering glimpses of the stunning cliffs from various angles. The view from the top is truly mesmerizing, with the contrast between the vibrant greenery and the pristine white cliffs creating a visual masterpiece. As you hike along the trails, keep an eye out for the rich flora and fauna that call this area home, including rare orchids and birds of prey.
