I often feel that major cities are over-hyped… (except Copenhagen, the “city love” of my life!) Milan was no exception; it was cute, but I’m not easily impressed with luxury fashion. For those who have also left their city-girl or city-boy era behind, here are 5 day trip destinations that easily accessible by public transport, to consider during your next Milan trip!
1. Blevio: Wandering Through Quaint Alleyways
Located on the stunning shores of Lake Como, Blevio is a charming village that transported us to a simpler time. Meander through its maze-like alleyways, take the narrow paths and see where they lead you. We discovered the quaintest of residential homes that were so charming, peaceful, and beautiful. It was hard to tell if people lived in the homes because it was so quiet. But we went in April, so maybe more people live there in the summer.
They best way to get there is by taking a train to Como, then bus to Blevio. If you have more time, I would suggest taking the Funicolare from Como-Brunate, explore Brunate, then take the Strada Regia trail down to Blevio. Check out my Lake Como vlog below that includes our journey to Blevio:
2. San Pellegrino: A Spa Lover’s Paradise
Nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps, San Pellegrino is renowned for more than just its famous mineral water. This town offers a rejuvenating escape for those seeking relaxation and wellness. San Pellegrino is home to world-class spas, where you can pamper yourself with a range of treatments and unwind in the midst of stunning natural beauty. Stay for a day and don’t forget to enjoy the complimentary afternoon aperitif. This destination promises to soothe your soul.
Train to Bergamo (definitely explore the famous Citta Alta village if you have the time) then bus to San Pellegrino.
3. Bellagio: Iconic Town by Lake Como
A day trip to Bellagio is an essential experience for anyone visiting Milan. This iconic town, situated at the point where Lake Como splits into two branches. Its steep alleyways are lined with charming shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering an array of local delights. To reach Bellagio, you can train to Como, then bus there. OR you can train to Verenna which then take a short ferry ride to Bellagio. This route is a little longer but gives such a scenic and immersive way to soak in the beauty of this beautiful region.
4. Olive Trail (Lugano, Switzerland): A Hidden Gem
Just a short train ride from Milan, Lugano, Switzerland, offers a hidden gem known as the Olive Trail. This trail is a tranquil, 1-2 hour walk along the shores of Lake Lugano, providing a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. As you stroll alongside centuries-old olive trees, enjoy the peaceful lake views and bougie home views. It was so serene, especially if you get there early in the morning, like I did.
Yes, you will need separate train tickets for however many stop you plan to make when you are in Ticino. While it is technically in Lombardy, your Italian Lombardy passes will not work.
5. Monte Brè (Lugano, Switzerland): A Mountain Top Adventure
While in Lugano, be sure to make your way to Monte Brè, an adorable mountain-top town that can be reached by funiculars. The town is so quaint and perfect for grabbing a light snack. We went to Osteria Funicolare Monte Brè; it’s a little pricey but worth it for the view. Then make your way to Punto Panoramico, a vantage point that provides a dream-like view of the area – the trail to get there itself is a beauty. Everything is Switzerland is!
As you plan your next trip to Milan, consider embracing the art of slow travel by venturing beyond the bustling city streets. These five day trip destinations offer a chance to immerse yourself in local cultures, explore hidden gems, and unwind in tranquil settings. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover the authentic charm of Italy outside Milan!
